CHAPTER 22

AUGUSTINE

The ride to the Thatcher penthouse is anything but comfortable. It’s awkward as fuck. I find myself nearly slipping in and out of sleep as I drive through the busy streets. It’s Las Vegas, the city is alive at night, but I certainly wish I wasn’t. This isn’t how I imagined my night going. Honestly, I hadn’t imagined my night going anywhere besides fucking bed, but no, I’m sitting next to Ophelia fucking Thatcher and her kid whose cries are bursting my eardrums.

When we finally make it to the penthouse, I couldn’t be more relieved to stand upright, away from the awkward fucking tension radiating from Ophelia. I grumble to myself as I limp into the lobby, not bothering to help her with her bags, leaving that task all up to her. I’m almost halfway to the elevator when it slides open, the lights pouring out to the dark lobby as Ferdinand comes rushing out.

Ferdinand looks as fucking horrible as an angel can. His normally wild hair is a mess like he’s been continuously running his hands through it. His blue eyes are tinted red, and his hands are trembling. His head is whipping around viciously, and when he sees me, he takes off running.

Gerald must be in another elevator, but of course, Ferdinand doesn’t care that we might get caught. He’s smart, but his overwhelming love for his family makes him forget all logical reasoning. I’m not even worried about his fucking sister at this point. I’ve shot that horse in the head already. All I can focus on is the way Ferdinand runs to me, the sight of my boy still in tears.

“Thank you!” he cries as soon as his body collides with mine, jumping up and locking his legs around my waist. “Thank you, baby.”

“Enough of that,” I mumble, hating the fact that I have to set him down and force him to stop kissing my cheeks. “Gerald’s on his way.”

He nods but he doesn’t let go of my arms. I can see that he’s still rattled by all of this. “Hey,” I whisper, checking the elevators to make sure none of them are opening. I lean down and kiss his forehead. “It’s okay, angel. I told you I’d bring her here.”

Surprisingly, he doesn’t look at his sister but keeps staring at me. There’s something in the way his lips are twisted that make my stomach churn pleasantly. Although his eyes are one step away from gushing out a waterfall, there’s something hiding beneath the turbulent waters.

I recognize that face. I don’t know from where, or from when, but it seems all too familiar. It’s as if I know what he’s about to say because every fiber of my being is tingling with anticipation.

But the moment is ruined the second his blue eyes flicker over to his sister.

“Ophelia!” he yells, running up to the woman, grabbing her arms, and looking her over. “Fuck! You scared us!”

Ophelia doesn’t seem to give a shit that Ferdinand was worried. If Ferdinand is the angel of the family, Ophelia must be the devil.
